Confluence is named for the
juncture of the Casselman River and Laurel Hill Creek with the Youghiogheny River.
The surrounding natural resources provide opportunities for year-round activities.
The Youghiogheny River
has some of the best whitewater boating in the Eastern U. S. as
well as spectacular scenery. The region has excellent fishing opportunities, including Laurel Hill Creek, Whites Creek, McClintock
Run and the Youghiogheny River stocked with rainbow and brown trout.
Passing through Confluence is the
Great Allegheny Passage bike trail which in 2008 will be
part of a continuous non-motorized corridor from Pittsburgh to
Washington, DC.
There are several hundred miles of hiking trails in the area including the 70 mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail from
Ohiopyle to Johnstown, PA. Adjacent 19,052
acre Ohiopyle State Park has 79 miles of trails within nearly 20,000 Acres. Forbes State Forest and several Pennsylvania Game Lands are nearby bringing the total of public land to nearly 70,000 acres for outdoor recreation.
The area has four ski
resorts and many areas for cross-country skiing and other winter
activities. Within easy reach is Nemacolin Woods resort with a 18-hole championship golf course and world class day-spa, Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and open for public visitation, Fort Necessity and Jumonville Glen where the French & Indian war began, and Mt. Davis the highest point in Pennsylvania.
